Surprise Bundt Cake

With July 4th a week away, I was inspired to bake this surprise bundt cake! This recipe was easy enough for the kids to help me in the kitchen. My daughter gets excited about baking and I love seeing her eyes light up! We followed most of the instructions on the back of the cake mix box with a few variations. I used a confetti cake mix because it’s what I had on hand and it worked out fine. Lol! Keep reading to find out how we put the surprise in this bundt cake!

Ingredients

1 box white cake mix
1 cup water
1/2 cup oil
4 egg whites
Red and blue food coloring

Directions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Spray a bundt pan with oil and sprinkle with flour.

Stir cake mix, water, oil and egg whites until combined. In two separate small bowls, spoon 1/2 cup cake batter into each. Add seven drops of red food coloring into one bowl and blue into the other bowl. Mix in the food coloring until well combined. Now the magic starts!

Add a layer of the white batter to the bottom of the prepared pan. When you add the colored batters, try to stay away from the outer edge of the pan. Use a dinner spoon to add dollops of blue batter over the top. Then, add spoonfuls of red food coloring in between the blue. Add another layer of white batter and repeat with the blue and red batter. Layer on the remaining white cake batter. You should end up with something like this:

Then, take a toothpick or skewer and make swirls in the batter. We made two rounds of swirls through the batter to make sure the magic happens.

Bake on the center rack for about 40 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when you insert a toothpick and it comes out clean. Allow to cool before turning it over onto a plate.

The fun part is when you cut into the cake and see the beautiful swirls of red, white, and blue! Oh, hello colors! Serve with icing or whipped cream and fruit for a well rounded dessert. Happy July 4th!!!
