Cobblestone Gingerbread House

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays and this year Smarties gave me an excuse to go all out on a cobblestone gingerbread house! I was so excited to work on this project since it has been years that I’ve thought about decorating one! I went with a cobblestone design because I think it’s dreamy and romantic to see vintage relics. It was so fun working with this candy since it comes in different sizes, the colors are my jam, and I can easily alter it to fit my design. Keep reading to find out how I constructed my pink cobblestone gingerbread house.

Materials

Smarties candy in large and small sizes

1 Wilton Gingerbread House Barn

1 Wilton Gingerbread Dog House

Royal icing (3 batches)

White fondant

4 ice cream sugar cones

Extra sprinkles and gummies for decor

Red, green, & yellow coloring

Directions

Make 2 batches of the royal icing and use the red food coloring to tint light pink. Make one more batch of icing and reserve about 2/3 of it. Tint the other 1/3 light green.

Using the white icing that comes with the gingerbread houses, construct the doghouse base and let dry. Then add more icing on top of the barn and glue the dog house in place. Set the entire structure onto a 10″x10″ cake cardboard circle.

While the house is setting, prepare the Smarties candy. Put the larger size candy inside a plastic zip bag in a single layer and lightly pound it with a hammer to form the larger cobblestones. There will be smaller pieces too which you can save for the cobblestone entrance. Take more candy and grind them up in a coffee grinder or food processor to form the snow.

Take a small amount of fondant and color it a darker pink than the royal icing. Roll it out and cut the door. Take a fondant tool or knife and score lines through it to make wood grain. Take some more fondant and tint it with a tiny amount of yellow food coloring. Roll it out and cut 2 large windows and a small circle window. Outline the windows with the white royal icing. Using the green icing fitted with a small floral tip, pipe a wreath on the front door. Finish with a couple of sprinkles for a ribbon.

Once the house has set, take the pink royal icing and slather it on the sides of the house. Then cover the frontside and place the door and windows on first. Add smaller whole pieces of smarties around the top of the two large windows, around the door and the circle window. Then, place the larger cobblestone candy pieces throughout the frontside of the house.

Moving onto the roof….Add more pink icing on one side of the roof. Then start lining and layering the larger whole candy pieces from the bottom up. Repeat on the other side.

Take the white icing and cut the piping bag to make a wider opening. Pipe snow on to the top and front of the roof. Add a few pink sprinkles to make it sparkle. Then pipe more icing snow to completely cover the cardboard circle.

To make the trees, cut about 1 1/2″ off the base of two sugar cones. Pipe the icing onto the two cut cones. Add green sprinkles to look like ornaments. Then, spread the green royal icing onto the other two cones and decorate with more smarties. Place these cones onto both sides of the house. Line the front entrance of the house with whole smarties and add the crushed pieces in between to look like cobblestone. Add a couple of green gummy trees to finish both sides of the entrance.

Add a little bit of magic by dusting with the powdered Smarties snow! Hope you enjoy this and get creative with your own gingerbread house fun! Please tag me @diy_bucket_list with your creations!

  1. This is too adorable. Not something I would want to eat or dispose. I’d preserve this cute gingerbread house forever. Love the cobble stones n the pastel colors. Also love how it perfectly fits on the cake stand. This gingerbread house definitely deserves to be high up on a hill for all to see.

    1. Thanks so much! My daughter took two of the roof “shingles” because she was hungry and my husband refused to throw it away. So we are putting it away to see if it’ll make it to this Christmas. Lol!
