This year has been a very eventful year for my family and I had the opportunity to help throw a whimsical little birdie baby shower for my sister-in-law, Kaonu.  She is one of the most thoughtful and loving individuals I know and I was excited to do this for her.

She is a very creative person and already had a clear vision of what she wanted, so it was just a matter of making the pieces come together.   There were many other ladies on this baby shower committee and plenty of brilliant ideas that made for a sweet little shower.  However, I can’t take credit for all of them and will only include the parts I had a hand in.

The shower took place around Easter which made it very easy to find pastel color décor.  We also found great deals on a lot of these items since the theme crossed over with this holiday.

To include Kaonu’s beautiful 3 year old daughter, I made floral crowns for the both of them to wear during the shower.  Unfortunately, with all the hustling around, I did not get a mother daughter photo of them wearing the crowns.  But I did get a picture of my daughter’s stuffed animals modeling them before the shower.  I made these out of floral wire that I shaped into a crown and covered with brown ribbon.  Then I attached the faux flowers by wrapping the stems around the crown with more floral wire.

I also made a couple of these little birdie diaper cakes to use as decoration.  I made the nest on top out of basket filler and used my hot glue gun to attach it to a round piece of construction paper.  I found some small Easter eggs and nestled them inside.  The outside of the cake was covered with wide burlap ribbon, a layer of lace ribbon, and finally a thin pink ribbon.  I cut out these little birdies from scrape book paper and added gem beaks for a whimsical touch.

For the gift area, I wanted it to stand out so the guests could easily see where to place their gifts.  It also doubled as a nice backdrop where she opened her gifts.  To make the ruffles, I cut up a pink table skirt into three pieces and attached them onto the wall with poster putty.  Tissue paper flowers are made similar to pompoms and both are still very popular for party décor.  I made my own floral version here.  I attached them along the top of the ruffle backdrop with more poster putty.

I made the “gifts” sign by attaching paper doilies and cut out letters to a pre-made banner.  Then I attached a couple of bird cut outs at each end to hold up the sign.

For the dessert/thank you table I wanted to create a whimsical outdoor scene that will make sense with the birdies.  I harvested these branches from my backyard and held them up with landscaping brick chips.  Then I covered the base with some green Easter grass.  I also had some crystal strands that I cut up to hang on the branches and placed under the center cloud to mimic a rain shower.  I also used more scrape book paper birdies to hang on the branches.  Kaonu already had plenty of birdie décor like birdcages and eggs that we used for this table.

She also had these cute dessert trays that we used for other desserts like these petit fours.

We used the other side of the table for thank you gifts.  Kaonu and I used these burlap bags for party favors.  We stuffed them with candy for the humans and bird feeders for the birdies.  I made these bird feeders for the guests to hang in their yard to show our gratitude and to remind them of the shower a little longer after they leave.

It was exciting to see everything come together and to see the mother-to-be glowing.  I’m happy to have her in my life and glad I got to help celebrate this special time with her.  I think she’ll be good on diapers for a while. 🙂
